He noted that following the escalation of the situation between Hamas and Israel, the United States blocked a resolution calling for a humanitarian ceasefire in the UN Security Council.
“I think this, as I say as a human rights lawyer, is a very inadequate response from the political part of the organization (UN. – socialbites.ca) to what appears to be a case of genocide,” Mokhaiber said.
The former UN official added that genocide is defined by the World Organization convention against genocide, which defines it and certain elements of it that he believes are evident in Israel’s actions in Gaza.
Mokhaiber stated that he was unhappy with the approach of “the political part of the UN” rather than humanitarian workers. According to the former official, over the past 30 years the UN has become increasingly weak in its approach to the Middle East solution; “abandoned the emphasis on international human rights standards, international humanitarian law and the UN Charter.”
