Scientists from the University of Geneva found that mobile phone use can reduce the number of sperm in seminal fluid. Research results published In the journal Fertility and Sterility.

2,886 Swiss people aged 18 to 22 participated in the study. Participants reported how often they used their cell phones. In addition, scientists collected information about the subjects’ health and lifestyle and took sperm samples from them.

It turns out that frequent use of smartphones is associated with a decrease in the number of sperm in seminal fluid. The average sperm concentration was significantly higher in men who used the phone no more than once a week. However, mobile phones had no effect on sperm motility. Additionally, the results showed that the location of the smartphone (e.g., close to the body, in a trouser pocket) was not associated with a decrease in sperm quality.

The mechanisms underlying these results remain to be investigated. More research is needed to find out whether phone use affects the hormonal regulation of sperm production.
