Scientists from King’s College London found that black currants may reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. The results of the study were as follows: published In Food & Function magazine.

29 people between the ages of 18 and 70 participated in the study. Scientists divided them into two groups: Subjects in the first group consumed drinks containing blackcurrant phenols and citrus polyphenols every day. Phenols and polyphenols are natural compounds with antioxidant properties. The second group received a placebo.

At the end of the experiment, it was revealed that the insulin level in the blood of the subjects who consumed drinks containing phenol and polyphenol decreased. The main function of the insulin hormone is to transport glucose (sugar) into cells. Sometimes cells become resistant to this, meaning they stop responding to insulin. In this case, glucose from food does not enter the cells and accumulates in the blood. This condition can lead to the development of type 2 diabetes.

The mechanisms underlying the ability of phenols and polyphenols to affect blood insulin levels have not yet been investigated. Scientists noted that more research is needed to understand whether these compounds could benefit people with prediabetes.
