Surgeon Erin Nance of Lennox Hill Hospital in New York explained that typical stroke symptoms, such as paralysis on one side of the body and slurred speech, may not be seen in women. Symptoms to watch for include nausea, stomach upset, and shortness of breath. In this respect reports Daily mail.

The doctor noted that 60 percent of deaths from stroke in the United States occur in women. This is most likely because the symptoms of this condition are different in men and women. Classic symptoms such as numbness on one side of the body, slurred speech, and facial asymmetry are most common in men. In some cases, doctors cannot detect a stroke and misdiagnose migraine patients.

Women may experience confusion or disorientation, headache, and fatigue. Other warning signs include nausea, fainting and convulsions.

Nance added that strokes can occur differently because of differences in the size of the blood vessels leading to the brain. The areas of the brain affected by a stroke may also differ between men and women.
