Scientists from the University of South Australia have developed an innovative acne drug containing nanoparticles. Research results published In Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC).
Approximately 9.4% of the world’s population suffers from acne. This is a disease of the hair follicles and sebaceous glands that is sometimes difficult to treat.
The drug, called Narasin, contains antibacterial compounds contained in tiny nanoparticles. The medicine is a gel that should be applied to inflamed areas. Narasin, an antibiotic, is commonly used for bacterial infections in farm animals, but has never been studied before for the treatment of acne. Scientists tried to modify the formulation so that the nanocarriers would allow the antibacterial ingredients to penetrate the skin quickly and effectively.
The penetration ability of the drug was tested on the skin of a pig’s ear. Nanoparticles made it possible to increase the penetration efficiency of antibacterial compounds by 100 times compared to water. Additionally, the drug was able to reduce the severity of drug-resistant forms of acne.
Scientists stated that there are many oral medications for acne, but they have some harmful side effects. The new development will increase the effectiveness of topical medications and improve the quality of life of acne patients.
