The liver can grow safely after surgery to remove the tumor only if it is healthy. In this case, 20 percent of the organ will be enough for complete regeneration, said the head of the drug therapy department of the National Center for Medical Research Oncology. Blokhina, President of the Interdisciplinary Association of Liver Tumor Specialists Valery Breder.

“But this 20% needs to be fed with sufficient blood and the synthesized bile needs to be discharged. There are a lot of nuances here,” Breder noted.

According to him, the tumor is not always operated on and it largely depends on the patient’s condition.

“If we say this is a small tumor, the question is whether it can be removed and whether the remaining part of the liver is sufficient for life. And this is also largely determined by the functional reserves of the liver and concomitant pathology. “It’s one thing for an 80-year-old grandmother who has difficulty walking because she has a lot of comorbidities, but it’s another thing for a young man,” the oncologist gave the example.

According to him, sometimes even if the tumor is large, it can be radically removed along with a part of the liver, and the remaining part will be enough for life, then the treatment option will be surgery.

“Of course, if surgical intervention is not possible, we always evaluate alternative treatment options,” the specialist said.
