Scientists from the University of Bath have found that the risk of serious injury associated with most sports and exercise, including those traditionally thought to be dangerous (cycling), is extremely low. A study showing that the benefits of the activity outweigh the risks was published in the journal injury prevention.
The authors analyzed data from patients who sustained serious injuries due to physical activity. They found that between 2012 and 2017, Britons suffered a total of 11,702 injuries.
61 types of sports and other physical activities were examined. Fitness activities (running, golf, dancing, and weight training) were least likely to result in injury.
Among the most popular sports, football turned out to be the most traumatic, followed by motor sports, horse riding and gliding among all the activities studied. They caused hundreds of injuries per 100 thousand people.
Scientists concluded that although no physical activity is completely safe, the likelihood of serious injury is extremely low compared to the many health and wellness benefits provided by an active lifestyle.
