Researchers from Tehran Medical University have found that proper nutrition can reduce the risk of dangerous lung diseases such as pneumonia and cancer. Research results published at BMC Public Health.

84 people with lung disease and 252 healthy volunteers participated in the study. Scientists sought to find a link between diet and the risk of COPD, a progressive, life-threatening lung disease characterized by inflammation of the airways and swelling of the bronchi. COPD often comes with complications such as pneumonia, lung cancer and cardiovascular disease.

The subjects were asked to recall what they ate throughout the year and fill out questionnaires. It turned out that patients with severe COPD consumed more whole grains than participants with mild COPD. Additionally, fruits, whole grains, vegetables, nuts, legumes, long-chain omega-3 fats, and polyunsaturated fatty acids reduced the risk of COPD complications such as cancer and pneumonia.

Scientists noted that a healthy diet can be an effective method to prevent COPD. Further studies are needed to confirm these findings and better understand the mechanisms underlying this finding.
