Dentist and medical expert Alexei Antipenko said that chewing gum with sweeteners is good for the oral cavity, as it weakens bacteria or leads to their death. This has been reported URA.RU.
He noted that chewing gum containing sugar should not be consumed.
“Another point is to chew sweetened gum. Sweetener tricks bacteria. The bacteria perceives the sweetener molecule as sugar and tries to digest it, but the energy required for the bacteria to digest this sweetener molecule takes many times more than it takes as a result of digestion. So the bacteria eventually consumes itself and either weakens or dies,” he said.
He added that sugar gum acts like candy – they contribute to the appearance of carious lesions.
Formerly dentist-orthodontist Andrey Zhuk saidthe fact that chewing gum can play an aiding role in oral hygiene.
However, gastroenterologist Dmitry Karpenko warns that it is not worth chewing gum on an empty stomach, so as not to provoke a sharp increase in appetite. In addition, the product should be used with caution in patients diagnosed with gastrointestinal diseases.
