In stores, red caviar is most often presented in glass or iron jars. Given the increasing prices of packaging, many manufacturers are beginning to actively use plastic containers. Olga Kalaydzhyan, head of the purchasing department of the PUTIN company, told socialbites.ca whether the taste of caviar in different packages is different.

Therefore, glass jars are chemically inert, durable and insulate odors well. Vacuuming the glass provides excellent sealing and protection from oxygen.

“The advantages of this type of packaging include environmental friendliness: glass is perfectly recyclable. At the same time, caviar in a glass jar requires more care during transportation. “The cost of a glass jar within the product price can go up to 200 rubles,” he said.

The tightness of the tin packaging is good and will not break during transportation. Its advantage is lower price.

“You cannot store caviar in an open iron box. If the seal is broken, air gets in, which causes oxidation of the metal and the caviar may taste “metallic.” For this reason, it is recommended that caviar be consumed within 48 hours after the package is opened.”

Plastic is often used in packaging large quantities of caviar and in wholesale quantities, but such products are also available in retail sales. The most important thing you need to know about plastic containers is that there is no vacuum inside them.

“Plastic lids with locking valves seal the package, but cannot ensure vacuuming. Therefore, the shelf life of this type of caviar is shorter: from 15 to 30 days. This is important to consider if you are planning a purchase for future use,” the expert said.

The expert also denied that the most delicious caviar is in glass jars.

“Packaging can only slightly affect the taste of the product and this is only possible if the seal is broken. The higher price of glass caviar is usually associated not with the quality of the product, but with the higher cost of the packaging itself. “The more original the shape of the box and the more elaborate its decoration, the higher the price,” he explained.

Another myth is that when you open a glass jar, the lid should make a popping sound.

“Its absence is an indication that the vacuum inside has been broken and such a product cannot be eaten. Violation of the vacuum can indeed lead to premature spoilage of caviar. At the same time, cotton is not an indicator of the vacuum level, it depends on the type of lid on the jar. Cotton is typical for caps with valves on the inner surface of the rim. “If there is no valve, there will be no sound, but this does not mean that the caviar inside is spoiled,” he said.
