Scientists from the University of Hong Kong have found a link between a sedentary lifestyle and an increased risk of coronary heart disease. Research results published At Wiley Online Library.

Coronary heart disease is a disease associated with reduced or complete cessation of blood flow to the muscle tissue of the heart. It occurs due to narrowing of the lumen of the heart arteries when atherosclerotic plaques appear in them. The characteristic symptoms of this disease are shortness of breath and chest pain.

77,500 British men and women took part in the study. Researchers analyzed the subjects’ health data and recorded information about their mobility levels in daily life. The scientists then evaluated each participant’s genetic risk for ischemia using the polygenic index technique. This method reflects an individual’s estimated genetic predisposition to inherit a particular trait.

The results showed that a sedentary lifestyle was associated with an increased risk of coronary heart disease, regardless of genetic predisposition.

Additionally, replacing one hour of inactivity with an equivalent amount of moderate to vigorous physical activity reduces the risk of developing this disease by approximately 9%. It also turned out that physical activity protects people with a genetic predisposition to ischemia better than healthy people.

The study’s authors hope the results will help the World Health Organization establish new physical activity standards for people with heart disease.
