Neuropathy (impaired function of nerves or a single nerve) and nephropathy (kidney damage with impaired filtering function) may be a result of advanced type 2 diabetes. They are seen in more than 50% of people with this diagnosis.

Managing diabetes involves monitoring your blood sugar levels, dieting, and exercising regularly.

In order to determine the minimum threshold of physical activity to prevent complications of this disease, scientists conducted a study involving more than 18 thousand volunteers with type 2 diabetes. Researchers collected information about participants’ health and physical activity. Only 32% of subjects said they lead a very active lifestyle.

It turns out that even minimal physical activity reduces the risk of developing neuropathy and nephropathy. These conditions are diagnosed less frequently in patients who lead a completely sedentary lifestyle. Minimum activity level is defined as one and a half hours of walking activity level per week. This is an “achievable goal” for most patients, the study authors noted.
