Scientists at Oregon State University in the Cascades found that gut bacteria found in wild worms may be beneficial for domestic dogs with inflammatory bowel disease. The research was published in the journal Applied Microbiology.
The study authors analyzed the gut microbiome of a wild wolf that had been hit by a car. They isolated 20 different gut bacteria. They discovered bacteria paenibacillus It can digest complex carbohydrates such as starch. It may also reduce inflammation in the intestines. This means the bacteria could form the basis of a nutritional supplement for dogs with inflammatory bowel disease.
The modern dog’s high-carbohydrate diet does not match that of the wolf; for example, starches in processed foods are difficult to digest and can have a negative impact on the microbial community in the gastrointestinal tract. Symptoms of inflammatory bowel disease include vomiting, decreased appetite, weight loss, bloating, stomach rumbling and pain.
