Scientists from the City University of Hong Kong used intestinal probiotics to normalize the blood pressure of mice with hypertension. The research was published in the journal mSystems.
An estimated 40% of adults around the world have high blood pressure (hypertension), increasing the risk of stroke and heart attack. Recent research has shown that probiotics (medicines containing bacteria) for the gut may improve blood pressure control.
In a new study, researchers artificially caused a sustained increase in blood pressure by adding fructose to mice’s water bowls for several weeks. The animal parts were also given probiotics containing bacteria. Bifidobacterium Lactis And Lactobacillus Rhamnosus. The blood pressure of mice receiving both drugs dropped significantly; this was almost the same as in healthy mice fed normal diet.
Researchers also found that probiotics normalized the gut microbiome, which was disrupted by a high-fructose diet. Scientists are now planning a large clinical trial to see whether the protective effect of probiotics extends to people with hypertension.
