The kidneys perform the excretory function by removing excess fluid and dissolved substances from the blood. Therefore, malnutrition plays an important role in the formation of pathologies of these organs. Artur Bogatyrev, urologist-andrologist at the SM-Clinic Center for Reproductive Health, told socialbites.ca which foods can be harmful to the kidneys.
According to him, people with kidney problems should not eat foods with high oxalate content (spinach, hazelnuts, chips, french fries, sorrel, beets, bran, chocolate). You should also avoid foods rich in potassium, such as avocados.
“Potassium is beneficial in general, especially for the heart. It regulates fluid in the body, maintains cell buffering and electrolyte balance. However, its excess causes hyperkalemia. Bogatyrev said the main symptoms of the disease are slow heart rate, nausea and fatigue.
He also advised not to indulge in drinks high in alkaloids, such as coffee, strong tea, cola and others. According to him, if consumed frequently, it can lead to kidney stone formation. Therefore, it is not recommended to drink more than two cups of coffee a day, but it is best to limit yourself to one serving.
“As you know, dairy products are a source of calcium. But if you consume a lot of dairy products, high concentrations of calcium begin to appear in the urine, which significantly increases the likelihood of developing urolithiasis,” warns the urologist.
Also, as the doctor said, you should be careful about consuming butter, which is a source of cholesterol and saturated fat. Their use increases the risk of heart pathologies, which will inevitably affect the functioning of the excretory system.
Another harmful product for the kidneys is salt in large quantities. The expert added that it causes accumulation in the body and excess sodium can disrupt the hydrolytic balance.
“You should not indulge in foods containing purines, such as meat and liver. These substances stimulate the production of uric acid. At the same time, the kidneys must work harder. Excessive consumption of animal proteins can lead to kidney stone formation. In addition, uric acid accumulates in the joints and causes arthritis to develop,” Bogatyrev concluded.
