Italian scientists from Trent University examined the cuisine and culinary habits of Neanderthals. Experts have concluded that modern humans’ ancient ancestors were more advanced than thought. To work published In the scientific journal PLOS One.

“Neanderthals were capable of symbolic thought, could create artistic objects, adorn their bodies with personal ornaments, and had an extremely diverse diet.

We can safely say that they usually eat cooked food. “This ability confirms that Neanderthals were as capable as Homo sapiens living a thousand years later,” said archaeologist Diego Angelucci, who participated in the study.

The scientists’ conclusions are based on a study of Neanderthal sites in the Gurta de Oliveira cave in central Portugal. Researchers have discovered sites there that have long been used for cooking.

Burnt bones showed that Neanderthals roasted deer, goat, horse, bison and rhino meat, as well as boiled turtles in their own shells on hot stones.
Findings elsewhere have shown that ancient ancestors of modern humans also cooked fish, mussels and shellfish, and even toasted pine nuts.

Despite the excavations, archaeologists have not been able to determine exactly how Neanderthals lit fire. Scientists hypothesize that they created sparks using flint, but there is no evidence yet to support this hypothesis.
