Scientists at Karolinska University in Sweden have developed a new test that can measure a person’s biological age. The results of the study were as follows: published At Wiley Online Library.

The new test is an epigenetic clock, a type of biochemical assessment that looks at DNA (samples of tissue, cells or organs) to reveal how much of a difference there is between biological age and chronological age (the number of years lived). To evaluate the accuracy of the tool, researchers recruited more than 400 patients with chronic kidney disease.

Blood test results have shown that people with these conditions have a faster biological clock than the average person. However, in cases with kidney transplantation, the biological age was close to the chronological one.

Another factor that increases biological age is the DNA methylation process. Methylation can be defined as a chemical change that occurs in the building blocks of DNA. In this case, the functioning of the genes changes. They become more or less sensitive to the body’s biochemical signals. This can lead to various malfunctions in the body and cause diseases such as cancer.

The researchers hope the tool can be used in the future to develop treatment strategies for diseases that speed up the body clock.
