Experts from the University of Glasgow in Scotland, together with American colleagues from the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota, have discovered another mechanism of aging. The study was published in the scientific journal magazine Nature.
Scientists investigated the causes of inflammatory processes in old and damaged cells and also proposed a way to stop this process. They found that due to age-related changes or cancer treatment, mitochondria (cellular structures that convert food into energy) lose their seal and release DNA. This causes inflammation, which accelerates aging.
“Our study reveals an unexpected link between mitochondria and inflammatory effects in old cells. We found that mitochondrial permeability, a process originally linked to cell death, promotes inflammation in old and damaged cells. This opens up new areas of research with the potential to create new treatments for aging and cancer ” said Professor Stephen Tate, who led the study.
