Researchers from the University of Queensland (Australia) have identified gene variants that may increase the risk of developing nodular melanoma. In this respect reports NewsMedical.

Nodular melanoma is a type of malignancy that often arises from ordinary moles or grow on the skin without previous visible symptoms. This type of melanoma progresses rapidly and is often diagnosed too late because the disease occurs without symptoms.

The study analyzed 500 genes believed to be associated with cancer risk. Of these, scientists identified 39 genes that influence the likelihood of nodular melanoma. Four out of 39 are the most common in the genome of patients with this disease.

The authors noted that a genetic risk factor for nodular melanoma has not been previously identified. The study will allow doctors to more effectively identify people who are prone to this disease and refer them to comprehensive examinations.
