Participating in sexual activity and experiencing sexual pleasure can have a significant impact on mental health in old age. This conclusion was reached by American scientists from Hope College and Purdue University. The study was published in the scientific journal magazine Journal of Sex Research (TJSR).

To examine the link between sexuality and cognitive health, researchers turned to data from the National Social Life, Health, and Aging Project (NSHAP). Experts analyzed data from 1,683 participants over the age of 62 who had been married or had a sexual partner for five years.

The study examined three dimensions of partnered sexuality: frequency of sex, level of physical pleasure from sex, and emotional satisfaction with sexual intercourse.

It turns out that having sex at least once a week improves the cognitive function of people ages 75 to 90 compared to their sexually inactive peers.

For people aged 62 to 74, the main factor affecting cognitive function was the quality of sexual intercourse and the pleasure they received from it. Retirees who were satisfied with their intimate experiences had higher thinking abilities than their dissatisfied peers.

Scientists found no significant difference between men and women in terms of frequency of sexual intercourse and its impact on cognitive functions.
