Vadim Vinogradov, Dean of the Law Faculty of the Higher School of Economics at the National Research University, said that Roskomnadzor already has the right to block VPN services.
According to him, this happens regularly. The lawyer also added that starting March 1, search results for VPNs that provide access to banned sites will also be limited.
“Collecting user information is one of the main sources of revenue for VPN services. Such practices occur through the sale of users’ personal data to third parties. As a result, the least evil that can await a person is a large number of spam emails and calls. Otherwise, considering the collected data, the user may fall under the radar of fraudsters. “Therefore, further restricting their work is an absolutely logical step,” he emphasized.
In turn, Efim Kazantsev, a lawyer and expert of the educational platform Moscow Digital School, said that the hype that appeared in the media about blocking VPN services was actually a result of misinterpretations.
“The draft order of Roskomnadzor, published on the legal information portal, does not imply immediate blocking of all VPN services,” he said.
According to him, the project only expands the list of criteria for adding pages containing information on bypassing blocking to the list of prohibited resources.
“With an expanded list of criteria, it will be possible to block pages that do not help bypass blocking (such as VPNs or anonymizers) but contain information on bypassing blocking: instructions for setting proxies and VPNs, addresses of relevant services, etc. .,” added Kazantsev.
Let us remind you that Roskomnadzor plans to issue an order according to which, starting from March 1, 2024, VPN services in all application stores, including the Play Market and AppStore, will be blocked if they provide access to blocked resources. This has been reported RIA News.
