Scientists from the Karolinska Institute in Sweden have found that smoking may increase the risk of type 2 diabetes. It turns out that nicotine addiction triggers metabolic changes in the body, which leads to diabetes. In this respect reports EurekAlert.
Scientists analyzed medical data from more than 93,000 participants from the British Biobank. None of the subjects had diabetes at the beginning of the observation. After 13 years, 1,869 participants were diagnosed with the disease. Compared to non-smokers, smokers had a 73% higher risk of developing diabetes.
It was revealed that smoking affects 131 metabolites in the human body. Metabolites are substances that undergo transformations during the metabolic process. They are carried over long distances by blood to other cells of the body. Metabolites can affect the activity of nerve centers as well as other tissues and organs.
Nicotine converts glycoprotein acetylates, fatty acids and lipids. Together, these biomarkers indicate how likely a person is to develop type 2 diabetes.
Researchers also noted that it is even more important for people with a genetic predisposition to this disease to get rid of nicotine addiction.
