An international team of scientists from Germany and the USA studied the immune responses of infants in the first months of life after COVID-19 infection. To work published In the scientific journal Cell.

Experts observed 54 infected newborns and young children. The other 27 babies were healthy and represented the control group.

Scientists found that babies developed persistent antibody responses for up to 300 days. In the newborns’ blood, there was an increase in markers of innate cell activation but no significant increase in inflammatory cytokines (proteins that direct the body’s immune response). The response of B and T lymphocytes in infants was significantly lower than in adults.

The study’s findings open the possibility of developing vaccine formulations that exploit these pathways to activate the innate immune system. Experts noted that this would prevent the emergence of side immunopathologies often associated with unwanted inflammation.
