Scientists from the University of Connecticut (UConn) found that older adults with hypertension need to walk 7,000 steps a day to lower blood pressure. The study was published on: Journal of Cardiovascular Development and Disease.

The new study involved 21 people aged 68 to 78 who led sedentary lifestyles: Before the experiment, these people walked an average of four thousand steps a day. Eight of them were already taking medication to lower blood pressure. Participants were given pedometers and blood pressure monitors to track their daily steps and blood pressure.

The study showed that an additional three thousand steps made it possible to significantly reduce blood pressure: the upper level decreased by 7 mmHg, and the lower level by 4 mmHg. This corresponds to an 18% relative reduction in the risk of cardiovascular disease and a 36% reduction in the risk of stroke.

Walking speed and continuity were less important than increasing the total number of steps. Scientists have determined the optimal number of steps per day to be seven thousand, in accordance with the recommendations of the American College of Sports Medicine.
