Middle-aged Russians mostly suffer from five endocrine diseases: hypothyroidism, thyrotoxicosis, goiter, thyroid nodules and prediabetes. Yulia Kathuria, endocrinologist at the European Medical Center (EMC), told socialbites.ca.

“As people get older, hypothyroidism (insufficient hormone production) becomes more common. Nodules are also common. Thyrotoxicosis, an increase in the production and content of thyroid hormones in the blood, is less common, but can also bother middle-aged Russians. In different regions, endemic goiter occurs with different frequency; insufficient enlargement of the thyroid gland due to iodine consumption,” explained the expert.

The second most common reason for treatment is problems with carbohydrate metabolism. The most common are impaired glucose tolerance and increased fasting blood sugar.

“This is called prediabetes and type II diabetes. Today, prediabetic conditions occur not only in middle-aged people but also in adolescents and even children. Regardless of age, the most important reason is excess weight. Most of the time, weight gain is associated with malnutrition and lack of physical activity,” Kathuria emphasized.
