Scientists from Emory University (AB) found that regular yoga practice can relieve symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis, as well as reduce the number of Th17 immune cells that contribute to joint inflammation. The research was published in the journal Scientific Reports.

The study included 64 people with active rheumatoid arthritis. Half did 120 minutes of guided yoga every day for eight weeks, and half took medication.

Severity of disease was assessed using DAS28-ESR, which takes into account four factors: number of painful joints, number of swollen joints, visual analogue scale score of the patient’s overall health, and erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR). degree of inflammation.

Significant improvement in DAS28-ESR scores and changes in the activity of inflammation-related genes were seen in the yoga group. Additionally, a significant decrease in the number of Th17 cells secreting cytokines was observed in the patients. These substances contribute to increased inflammation. There was also a significant increase in the population of Treg cells, which play an important role in suppressing inflammation, in the yoga group.

The authors noted that they did not test the effectiveness of other activities. They also admit that doing 120 minutes of yoga every day is not for everyone.

Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease accompanied by joint inflammation and pain. It occurs when the immune system attacks the lining of the joints. Rheumatoid arthritis also affects other organs: eyes, heart, circulatory system and lungs. Early symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis may include joint pain, tenderness, swelling or stiffness that lasts six weeks or longer, and morning stiffness that lasts 30 minutes or longer. Usually, more than one joint on different sides is affected, and problems often start in small joints.
