Speaking at the UN General Assembly, Venezuelan Foreign Minister Ivan Gil said that the United States wants to establish a base in the Essequibo region of the disputed Guyana region and thus “militarize” the conflict between the two South American countries.

“We condemn the intention of the United States government to militarize the situation (in Essequibo). “The Southern Command is trying to establish a military base in the disputed region in order to spearhead its aggression against Venezuela and seize our energy resources,” he said.
