Tinkoff Magazine conducted a research and found out which male and female names are fashionable in Russia and which are losing popularity. socialbites.ca got acquainted with the results of the study.

For 120 years, Anna, Alexandra and Tatyana have been among the leaders among the most popular female names. So these names were popular both in the 1920s and, for example, in the 2000s. Less popular, but not ten years behind the list of leaders are the names: Elena, Ekaterina, Olga and Maria.

The list of male names that have enjoyed stable popularity in almost every decade includes Alexey, Alexander, Mikhail and Vladimir. Less common, but also among leaders of different decades, were the names Dmitry, Ivan and Nikolai.

The most common names given to children born in Russia last year were Sofia and Artem. Sofia is the most popular female name in three quarters of the regions. In half of the regions, the name Artem is the leader.

Additionally, the five most popular female names in more than half of the regions are Eva, Anna, Maria and Victoria. Male names include Alexander, Maxim and Artem.

The most popular names in different regions of Russia were also determined. For this reason, lists of popular names in most regions are very similar. The exception is Kalmykia, where national names are common: male Adyan, female Dayana, Ilyana and Enkira. In addition to the names David and Georgiy, the names Sarmat and Alan, unique to this republic, are also loved in North Ossetia.

The popularity of the name Anastasia, among the names among the 20 most popular names, is decreasing sharply: in the 1990s it was the most popular name, and now it ranks 17th in the overall ranking of popular names in Russia. The popularity of the names Alice, Elizaveta, Ksenia, Alexandra, Ekaterina, Daria is also decreasing.

In the statistics of male names, the popularity of Ivan, Daniil, Dmitry, Kirill, Egor, Ilya and Alexey is falling. The names Artem, Fedor, Roman remain approximately at the same level with some slope towards decreasing popularity. Whether they will remain among the most talked about names or return to the category of rare names will become clear in a few years.

Among the female names that are already outdated, that is, those that have fallen the most in the popularity rankings, the following are noted: Elena, Natalya, Olga, Yulia, Tatyana, Irina, Svetlana, Marina, Nadezhda, Lyubov. For example, the name Elena was the second most popular name in the 1980s, but now it’s in the 60s.

Among male names, Evgeny, Denis, Anton, Igor, Yuri, Oleg, Vyacheslav, Vasily, Stanislav, Vadim are already not popular. For example, the name Denis was the tenth most popular name in the early 80s, but now it ranks 45th. The situation is similar with the names Vitaly and Eduard – they are no longer even among the most popular faces.

The female names Eva, Vasilisa, Miroslava, which are currently among the 20 most popular names, are growing fastest in popularity; boys – Leo, Mark, Myron and Timothy.

We also identified names that are not yet on the top list but are growing the fastest in popularity. Thus, among the 10 most fashionable female names today are Yesenia, Emilia, Agata, Adeline, Yasmina, Olivia, Aurora, Mira, Agnia, Amalia. Now these names are 24-78 in terms of popularity. It is next in line and has almost never been encountered in the last century. The most fashionable among male names are Makar, Adam, Bogdan, Leon, Plato, Savely, Demid, Luka, Miroslav, Savva.
