Scientists from Tehran University of Medical Sciences found that spinach extract could accelerate wound healing in diabetic rats. The research was published in the journal Scientific Reports.

Diabetes is associated with many serious long-term complications; One of these is chronic ulcers that do not heal for months or even years. Therefore, patients with diabetes often need foot or leg amputation.

In the new study, scientists divided 72 young male mice into groups. Control animals were given saline solution, and experimental animals were given aqueous or alcoholic spinach extract. Spinacia oleracea. All medications were administered orally. Rats were also artificially induced to develop skin ulcers.

Spinach extract accelerated wound healing in diabetic rats compared to animals that did not receive it. The recovery rate was comparable to people without diabetes.

The results may be due to the presence of vitamins in spinach, which support the healing process by increasing collagen levels, fibroblasts, and vascular density in wounds. These include vitamin C.

Spinach extract also reduced glucose levels and promoted weight loss in mice. Scientists suggest that spinach extract may be used to effectively treat chronic diabetic ulcers, but more research in humans is needed.

Spinach can be consumed raw or cooked. It contains fiber and high levels of minerals, especially iron, magnesium and potassium, as well as vitamins E, C, folic acid and A. Spinach is also a source of antioxidants such as phenols, flavonoids, lycopene, lutein and linolenic acid. The water extract of spinach also contains thylakoids and various types of amino acids, while the alcohol extract contains glutamine, which plays an important role in reducing inflammation and healing wounds.
