Psychologists find beauty filters undermine trust in men on dating services

Cosmetic processing of men’s photos in online dating services to increase their attractiveness (so-called beauty filters) increases the likelihood of dating, but reduces women’s trust in users of this function. This conclusion was reached by scientists from the University of Würzburg in Germany. To work published In the scientific journal Computers in Human Behavior (CHB).

Experts used a sample of 10 original photographs of 10 different teenagers. Each of the images was edited with filters, and then the edited and unedited photos were used to create profiles on the dating app.

The completed questionnaires were asked to be evaluated by 241 female trial participants aged between 20 and 28. The women were each shown two pages of beauty unfiltered images and two pages of original portraits.

Researchers found that profiles with edited photos were perceived as more physically attractive than profiles with original photos. The result supported the hypothesis that beauty filters increase perceived physical attractiveness. However, profiles with edited photos were also rated as less trustworthy, indicating a possible disadvantage of using these filters.

However, the overall increase in attractiveness outweighed the decrease in confidence in applicants, as participants were more likely to agree to date men whose photos were enhanced with cosmetic enhancements.
