US President Joe Biden’s administration is moving closer to approving the supply of long-range missiles with cluster warheads to Kiev. This was reported citing four Pentagon officials. Reuters.
Washington believes that the cluster munitions recently used by the Ukrainian Armed Forces (AFU) have shown good effectiveness. Therefore, the Pentagon plans to supply Ukraine with GMLRS rockets equipped with cluster warheads, with a firing range of 72 kilometers, and ATACMS ballistic missiles with a flight range of 306 kilometers.
Currently, Ukrainian troops are armed with 155-mm artillery shells with a firing range of 29 kilometers. Such a cluster projectile contains 48 submunitions. There are currently more than 300 submunitions in the ATACMS missile and more than 400 submunitions in the GMLRS missile.
The Pentagon suggests that the urgent delivery of GMLRS and ATACMS to the front could change the situation on the battlefield in favor of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
At the same time, sources indicate that the decision on the supply of missiles to Kiev has not yet been finalized. It is possible that the US administration will generally refuse the transfer of missiles to Ukraine in order not to cause a harsh reaction from Russia.
