According to the publication, in July the National Union for the Protection of Consumer Rights analyzed the composition of kvass and sweet drinks popular among adults and children. Violations in the composition of drinks were revealed in a third of samples purchased from the largest Russian retail chains. In particular, while the permissible alcohol level in kvass is 1.2%, manufacturers exceed its content by three times.
Therefore, such products are actually alcohol and their production and circulation must be regulated in accordance with the relevant alcohol legislation. It should not be used by children and vehicle drivers.
The National Union for the Protection of Consumer Rights recommended that the government take measures to remove kvass with a high degree of alcohol from sale. In the union’s opinion, public organizations should be given the right to selectively monitor kvass for alcohol content before it is allowed to be placed on the market.
According to the president of the association, Pavel Shapkin, the increased alcohol content in kvass may be due to technological violations during production. Beverages in particular had to be pasteurized, which would stop the fermentation process.
