This is Lope de Vega’s Dog in the Manger. It is an excellent work in which a young woman begins to fall in love with her secretary when she sees him falling in love, hesitates between following her impulses and upholding the demands of her social class, and driving the valor she realizes in the process crazy. I want to describe Lope’s famous work, but paying attention to all the characters. And it’s like a silly and hilarious time-travel, too, counting why everyone in the Spanish Golden Age put bacon in their stew, whether they liked it or not. And how the length of hours changes throughout the day, and why, through scientific study, such disparate objects as a two-headed cow’s fetus are clustered together. And what were the names of the things that were put on it that had weird names that we now call clothes? But not only that, I also want to tell you how similar we are to these people who are so far away in time, despite technological advances and our current speed, despite everything.
