According to scientists from University College London, breast enlargement during pregnancy increases the risk of cancer in women over 35. The results of the study are presented as follows: magazine Nature Communications (part of the Nature group).

During the study, the authors analyzed genetic mutations in the breast cells of 29 women. They found larger mutated cell fragments in women over the age of 35 who gave birth to their first child. Detected clots are harmless, but they can turn into cancer with a 30% probability in the future. According to experts, the increased risk of breast cancer due to pregnancy will continue for about 5-10 years after pregnancy.

According to scientists, body cells mutate with age, and breast cells are no exception. The late first pregnancy worsens this process, because during this process the breast enlarges and atypical cells grow together with healthy cells. Moreover, the risks are equalized if a woman already has children and is breastfeeding them.

The authors noted that the results open up the possibility of establishing a test for breast cancer. In the future, scientists will be able to track chemicals released by mutated cells and detect them with a blood test.
