Papillomaviruses (HPV) ranked third as they have more than fifty genotypes. Infection of some of these leads to different types of cancer.
“Here is the second most common cervical cancer in women after breast cancer. Cancer caused by human papillomaviruses is not inherited if breast cancer consists mainly of mutations, including inherited ones, in the human genome. This is a typical symptom of a sexually transmitted viral infection,” Netesov explained.
It’s still unclear why the papillomavirus causes cancer, according to the virologist.
“This virus is extremely difficult to study, like the hepatitis B virus, because it cannot be grown in cell cultures. There is only one system in which the hepatitis B virus is produced, but these are specialized cell cultures and they are very expensive. And then it multiplies very slowly in them, ”the expert concluded.
