An international team of scientists, including experts from Spain, Belgium and the United States, found that a third of adult men are infected with at least one type of genital human papillomavirus (HPV). This is evidenced by the results of a study published in an authoritative scientific journal. Lancet Global Health.
According to the publication’s material, the systematic review evaluated 65 studies published from 1995 to 2022. It is stated that approximately 45,000 men over the age of 15 participated in these.
According to the results of a meta-analysis, the global prevalence of any HPV type is 31%. At the same time, 21% of men in the world are infected with HPV, which carries a high oncogenic risk. It is stated that the two most common types are HPV-16 (5% of men) and HPV-6 (4%).
The results of the study show that HPV prevalence peaks in men aged 25 to 29 years in Europe and North America, sub-Saharan Africa, Latin America, the Caribbean, Australia and New Zealand.
