Diseases that will not prevent admission to service in the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) include clinically treated tuberculosis, viral hepatitis with minor functional impairment, asymptomatic HIV and others. According to the immunologist, such patients in military conditions will be difficult to control their ailments, so there may be a risk of contracting infections at army first aid points.

“For example, a person with HIV who is not on medication <…> The wounded will go to a place where they will provide medical care, and there they will violate the epidemiological regime, inject with the only syringe possible in military conditions, that is, the risk of injury to another person is small. The person injected with the same syringe will become infected, but no longer infected. The main problem, of course, is that people with HIV infection have to constantly take drugs, and in hostile conditions this is very difficult,” said Pokrovsky.

The expert explained that cured tuberculosis or hepatitis C would not pose a danger to other military personnel. However, untreated hepatitis also poses a risk of spreading the disease.

“It all depends on the conditions under which the service takes place,” the immunologist said.
