Scientists from the Medical University of Graz (Austria) found that Machiavellianism and psychopathy have a serious negative impact on sleep. The results of the study are presented as follows: magazine Boundaries in Psychology.

The authors examined how sleep is influenced by the personality traits of the dark triad, which includes Machiavellianism, psychopathy, and narcissism. The latter is characterized by grandiosity, pride, narcissism, and lack of empathy. Machiavellianism includes manipulation and exploitation of others, cynical disregard for morality, self-interest, and deception, while the main characteristics of psychopathy are antisocial behavior, impulsiveness, selfishness, heartlessness, and ruthlessness.

Analyzing data on the nature and quality of sleep from 657 people, scientists found that Machiavellianism and psychopathy were associated with poor sleep quality, insomnia, and other problems. The mechanism of this relationship has not been determined.

The sample included people with emotional disorders. The authors hypothesized that the effect of dark triad traits on sleep would be stronger. However, this was more pronounced in people without emotional disorders.

Experts suggest that their discovery will help develop new approaches to the treatment of sleep problems by influencing personality traits through psychotherapy.
