The “legionnaires’ disease” (legionellosis) infection that spreads in Poland and some other countries occurs through inhalation of pathogenic bacteria from hot tubs, humidifiers, and other systems that heat water. As soon as the bacteria enter the body, an asymptomatic incubation period lasting 2 to 10 days begins. After this, the body temperature may rise sharply, chills, headaches, muscle and joint pains, weakness may appear. In addition, cough begins with purulent sputum, appetite decreases, symptoms may be accompanied by diarrhea, nausea and vomiting. The patient’s condition will worsen with each passing day, with the course of the disease a cough with blood containing sputum may appear.
