The new school year in Russia will begin on Friday, and schoolchildren and students are waiting for some changes. Since the beginning of the new academic year, 27 new buildings have been opened in Moscow schools, while 22 new buildings are planned to be opened by the end of the year. This academic year, new teaching standards were introduced in engineering, medicine, business, media and information technology courses, as well as new psychological and pedagogical courses. 94 new educational programs will be launched in Moscow colleges, students of these programs will receive at least 3-4 qualification levels.

The Moscow Electronic School (MES) has also been changed – students and their parents will be able to see the full schedule of lessons, including apartments and departments. MES will also be available at Moscow colleges.

Among the main innovations made in schools in the new academic year, the return of silver medals draws attention. It will be given to students who do not take more than two quads during the year. Such medals will award a maximum of three additional points upon entry. The silver medal is the same size and design as the gold medal, only different in color. The inscription “For special achievements in teaching”, an open book and a laurel branch are depicted on one side of the silver medal.

In the new academic year, high school students will receive their first military training in basics of life safety (OBZh) courses. The program of this training will depend on the particular school and may be basic or advanced. In addition, additional lessons that schools can include in the curriculum or extracurricular activity plan as they wish were also implemented.

The Ministry of Education approved two programs for additional courses. The initial program includes lectures and meetings with soldiers and veterans, excursions to military units, military tactics and military sports games. Students will also be able to attend training camps at military-patriotic training centers. The second program will introduce children to the basics of first aid and nursing.

Additional courses will also include training on unmanned aerial vehicles. 10-11. Grade students will be taught to counter enemy drones, reconnaissance, and use drones on the battlefield. The basic military training course on the basics of life safety will introduce students to the Kalashnikov assault rifle, shooting rules and grenades.

Basic military education is also provided at universities in undergraduate, specialist and additional vocational programs. This course aims to build basic skills and abilities to prepare students for military or other civil service.

From September 1, all Russian 11th grade students will study the new history textbooks, which include sections on special military operations (SVO), Russia’s participation in the DPR, LPR, Zaporozhye and Kherson regions, and sanctions pressure.

The new textbooks were developed by MGIMO Rector Anatoly Torkunov and the head of the Institute of World History of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Academician Alexander Chubaryan. The price of a new Russian history textbook will be 849 rubles, which is 20% cheaper than the cost of the previous textbook. The textbooks will also include QR codes with links to archive materials.

The Russian Ministry of Education has also increased the number of history education hours in non-core faculties of universities.
