Researchers from the European Respiratory Society have found that treating obstructive sleep apnea helps combat other ailments as well. The results of the study were announced magazine ERJ Open Research.

Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) is a common pathology associated with a sharp decrease or complete cessation of breathing during nocturnal sleep. The disease is characterized by a temporary collapse of the soft tissues of the upper respiratory tract, which leads to their complete overlap (congestion). That is why for a certain time (from 2 to 60 seconds) the person stops breathing (in 80-90% of cases), while maintaining the respiratory movements of the muscles.

People with this disease often snore loudly. This increases the risk of stroke, high blood pressure, heart disease and type 2 diabetes. People can also suffer from chronic fatigue due to OSA.

The authors examined a method of treating the disease using a machine that works by blowing air through a face mask overnight to prevent blockages in the airways. The study suggests the treatment may offer additional benefits: reduced coughing, nocturnal heartburn, and wheezing.

ancient scientists establishedshowed that transcutaneous electrical stimulation can reverse sleep apnea.
