There was an epidemic of legionellosis, also known as “legionnaires’ disease”, in the south of Poland. An outbreak of the disease was recorded in the Polish city of Rzeszow, near the Ukrainian border.
According to the press service of Rospotrebnadzor, the risks of importing and spreading legionellosis into Russia are excluded. Experts of the Ministry monitor the situation at state border checkpoints using the Perimeter automated information system, which allows to identify citizens with symptoms of infectious diseases from countries with an unfavorable epidemiological situation.
Legionellosis is an infectious disease caused by the Legionella bacteria. It lives in natural water bodies and soil but is dangerous when it enters artificial water systems. The disease is not transmitted from person to person and there is a possibility of transmission through inhalation of water-dispersed aerosols from hot water systems, swimming pools, water parks and central air conditioning systems.
Rospotrebnadzor monitors hot water systems, examining water from pools and drinking water sources for the presence of Legionella bacteria. The press service emphasized that for the prevention of diseases it is important to comply with the rules for the maintenance of water systems, regularly clean, disinfect and prevent stagnation of water in unused faucets.
