Scientists from the University of Amsterdam found that people who prefer heavy meals are more likely to eat more. The results of the study are presented as follows: magazine PLOS ONE.

Eating behavior is influenced by various environmental factors such as portion size, food presentation, and food packaging. All of these factors can potentially affect the amount of food eaten. Overeating also contributes to the development of obesity.

In the new study, the authors decided to find out how this indicator is affected by the weight of the food served to the table. They hypothesized that people who ate heavier meals were more likely to eat more than normal.

More than 50 people who visited the canteen with a buffet table participated in the research. The authors recorded the volunteers’ eating habits, and also measured the weight of their trays and whether the participants overeat. The results showed that participants carrying heavier trays received twice as much food as those carrying lighter trays. At the same time, the volunteers noted that they received less food than those carrying lighter trays.

“This finding confirms that reduced sensitivity to weight can potentially increase food intake. Also, the results showed that participants who carried heavier meals were more likely to prefer unhealthy foods. Their portion may seem smaller than a serving of healthy food, but it is also heavier. Therefore, participants got more food,” the authors explained.
