Scientists from the University of Antwerp (Belgium) found that environmentally friendly paper straws for drinks are harmful to humans. The results of the research were published at: magazine Food Additives and Contaminants: Part A.

The authors analyzed straws from 39 different brands available in Europe for the presence of a group of synthetic chemicals known as poly and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS).

PFAS are perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl chemicals. These are synthetic substances used in many everyday items (dishes, food containers, clothing, cosmetic packaging and household chemicals) due to their resistance to water and heat. There are currently close to 10,000 different PFASs. Substances are practically not destroyed in natural conditions, therefore they accumulate in the soil and water bodies. A number of studies have revealed their harm to human health.

The results of the analysis by the science team showed that most of the straws tested contained these substances, with the highest concentrations found in straws made of paper and bamboo. PFAS was also detected in large quantities in plastic straws and in small quantities in glass straws. Steel pipes turned out to be the safest – no PFAS was found in them.

Straws made from plant-based materials such as paper and bamboo are often said to be more sustainable and environmentally friendly than plastic straws. However, our study shows the opposite,” the authors concluded.
