Scientists at the Hinda and Arthur Marcus Institute for Aging Research in the United States have found that the key to good sleep is to keep the bedroom temperature between 20-25°C at night. The results of the research were published at: magazine Journal of the Total Environment (JSTE).
It is in this temperature range where sleep will be most effective and calm. A higher or lower temperature causes a decrease in sleep quality. 50 people aged 65 and over participated in the study. They wore sleep trackers for a year and a half and also filled out a sleep quality diary. The scientists also learned about the temperature in the bedrooms of the participants.
While the most comfortable temperature was 20-25°C, sleep at 20°C was the longest. The team found a 5-10% decrease in sleep quality when the night temperature rose to 30°C; In this case, sleep was the most restless state.
“Previous research has shown that insufficient sleep can adversely affect cognitive performance and increase stress, anxiety, and fatigue. Our observations point to the possibility that sleep in the elderly could potentially be improved by creating a more comfortable home environment,” the authors write.
