Researchers from Hangzhou Normal University (China) found that diet affects symptoms of depression and anxiety. The results of the research are presented in a published article magazine BMC medicine.
Thus, increased consumption of sweets, butter, sugar and milk-based desserts, and low consumption of fruits and vegetables have been associated with increased symptoms of mental illness.
The authors used data from 157,000 volunteers, of which 70,000 were diagnosed with depression and 70,000 with anxiety disorders. Every 3-4 months, the scientists collected data on the diet and mental state of the participants – the study lasted 7 years and 6 months.
“Our results highlight the complex relationships between overall diet and symptoms of depression and anxiety. The current analysis provided robust evidence that increased intake of free sugars and saturated fatty acids is associated with increased symptoms of depressive and anxiety disorders,” the authors concluded.
