Forgetting turns out to be a form of learning

Experts from Trinity College in Dublin (Ireland) have proven that forgetting is a form of learning. The results of the research have been published magazine cell reports.

This theory was put forward a year ago. According to him, forgetting is a functional feature of the brain that allows it to interact dynamically with a dynamic environment. In the new study, the scientists conducted several experiments that examined the effect of natural, “everyday” forgetting and its effect on certain memories in the brain.

The authors focused specifically on retrospective intervention. This is a deterioration in the retention of memorized material due to memorization or working with subsequent material. That is, new information affects already existing memories, distorting them or impairing their ability to reproduce.

During the study, mice associated a particular object with a particular context or room and then recognized that object as suppressed from the original context. However, the rats forgot these associations when the competing impressions interfered with the initial memory. Neuroscientists genetically labeled a contextual group of brain cells that store a particular memory in the brains of these mice and monitored the activation and function of these cells.

As a result, the authors realized that stimulating cells with light restored lost memories in a variety of behavioral situations. What’s more, when the mice were given new experiences with forgotten memories, the cell groups improved.
