58% of all intentional homicides worldwide occur in just 10 countries. These countries include El Salvador, Brazil, Colombia, Venezuela, Mexico, Lesotho and South Africa, employee of the World Development Geography Laboratory of the Geographical Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Dmitry Samusenko, an associate professor in Moscow State. He told the Pedagogical University socialbites.ca, which uses UN data for calculations.
“In 2000, the top 10 countries accounted for 63% of all homicides in the world. Relatively speaking, if there are about 430,000 murders, then 63% make up the top 10. In 2019, this share decreased slightly to 58%. These numbers haven’t changed much in 20 years. “This shows that the top three, five, ten countries were responsible for the same number of murders 20 years ago,” he said.
At the same time, Russia is not among the opponents of the leader. According to the United Nations, the murder rate in Russia is 15.2 per 100,000.
“There is one nuance here, though: these are UN data. If we look at the data for Russia, there is a slightly different picture. “According to EMISS data, there are 4.7 deaths per 100,000, which is 3 times lower.”
