Researchers from Nanjing Agricultural University (China) studied the effect of green tea and its functional components on body weight and regulation of gut microbiota. The results of the study are also presented magazine food.

The authors used a mouse model: rodents were fed a high-fat diet. As a result, the mice developed obesity, which is associated with a change in gut microflora that contributes to weight gain. The animals were then exposed to green tea components: polyphenols, caffeine and L-theanine, which can reduce calorie absorption.

Various concentrations of tea were brewed with distilled water and tested for the total content of the above substances using spectrophotometry and high performance liquid chromatography. These concentrates were then given to groups of overweight mice.

The results showed that 4% green tea extract reduced bad gut bacteria and increased the good ones, potentially helping to fight obesity.
