Researchers from the Harvard Institute have found that the thymus gland (thymus or thymus), which is thought to be useless for adults, can fight cancer. results presented New England Journal of Medicine.
The thymus is a lymphoepithelial lymphopoiesis organ in humans and many animal species where the maturation, differentiation and immunological “learning” of the immune system’s T-cells takes place. In adults, the organ was considered dysfunctional, so it is removed during heart surgery to facilitate access to the heart and major blood vessels.
The results are based on observations of 6,000 people with thymus and 1146 people without these organs. The second group had twice the risk of adverse outcomes from any cause, including cancer, within 5 years of removal.
The reasons for these associations are unknown, but researchers suspect that the thymus deficiency somehow interferes with the healthy function of the adult immune system.
